At least once a year many users are faced with updating a SolidNetwork License server. Additionally, IT staff may want to move an existing licensing service from one server to another. In either case there are a couple of special considerations for working with the SolidNetwork License Server.
- Upgrading a license server application does not necessarily upgrade the license file itself. Upgrading the license server simply upgrades the SolidWorks Licensing Service.
- Many times upgrading a license server while allowing the existing license file to remain on the system results in a new computer ID being assigned the next time the computer interacts with the SolidWorks Activation Server. This is the means by which an updated license file is acquired.
Steps to perform before a server upgrade or migration:
1 – Launch the existing SolidNetwork License Administrator located on the license server.
2 – Check to make sure the users have all SolidWorks product licenses returned.
3 – Select ‘Modify’ and then ‘Transfer License’.
4 – Follow the on-screen prompts to transfer the activation back to the SolidWorks Activation Server.
5 – Once this is completed you should receive a message that the transfer was succesful.
6 – Uninstall the existing SolidNetwork License Server from the Programs and Features section of the Windows Control Panel.
Next, install the desired version of the SolidNetwork License Server. This can be done from the SolidWorks Installation Manager or by navigating to the \swlicmgr folder from the downloaded files or installation DVD and running setup.exe.
If this is on the same server then the existing serial number should be retained in the Windows registry. Otherwise enter the SolidWorks product serial number. Multiple products may use the same license server by separating the serial numbers with a comma.
Once the installation is complete launch the SolidNetwork License Administrator. You should receive a message box indicating that there are no licenses on the server and a prompt to activate. Follow the on-screen prompts for activation. Once this is completed you should receive a message that the transfer was successful.
