If you’re new to 3DVIA Composer or have been using it for awhile you will find a need to export “Views” and later import them back in to the same Composer file or a different Composer file.

1) Select the views that you want to export (to multi-select you can make use of the standard Windows CTRL + select, SHIFT+select, or CTRL+A)

2) Right Click and select “Export Views…”

3) Save the views as an .smgview  file format.

When you create a new Composer file from the same, original CAD data you can import the views by right clicking in the “Views” tab. This will bring in the same view orientation, background color, render mode and actor position.

Do you need to share your model with a non CAD client?  One way to do this in SolidWork is to save your model as a 3D PDF.

To accomplish this open your model within SolidWorks and choose File > Save As.  From the the “Save as type” drop down select ”Adobe Portable Document Format (*.pdf)”.  You will then be able select the option “Save as 3D PDF.”

For the best results it is recommended to use the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.  You can download the reader from http://www.adobe.com

Many times the output of a sheet metal flat pattern is oriented as it was modeled versus being oriented in a way that would lend itself to being cut for manufacturing. The DXF / DWG output can be aligned to any orthogonal model edge and the origin can be placed on any vertex.

To do this:

  1. Right click on the Flat Pattern feature and select ‘Export to DXF/DWG’.
  2. Provide a file name and location to save the resulting file.
  3. Find the ‘Output Alignment’ setting and select any vertex or leave blank to use the existing model origin for the DXF file origin.
  4. Select an orthogonal edge for the X or Y axis reference.
  5. Use the ‘Reverse’ option to toggle the reference direction as needed.
