Have you ever had trouble locating your SolidWorks Drawings after redlining them from paper drawings, eDrawings, or PDF’s?  If so, how can you locate the SolidWorks drawing file quickly?  Best answer: Search your PDM File System (READ>> EVERYONE SHOULD BE USING PDM)… But not everyone is using PDM so here is my answer.

For non-PDM users, you can create a smart note on your drawing that describes the complete file name and path of the saved SolidWorks Drawing on your file server.  To do this you can add a parametric note to your drawing title block template(s):

First edit your Sheet Format (Tile Block) to add a note that is linked to the current document.  Click the Link to Properties Icon  and from the drop down, Select Folder Name.

Click the Link to Properties Icon again and from the drop down,
and Select File Name this time to add the name of the drawing to the folder path note.

With View>Annotation Link Variables enabled the note formula should look like this when editing the note:
$PRP:”SW-Folder Name(Folder Name)” $PRP:”SW-File Name(File Name)”.

This parametric drawing note will now show the saved file name and folder location on your printed paper drawings, eDrawings, and PDF’s.

This DDi CADcast covers the new features and enhancements to the Workgroup and Enterprise PDM in SolidWorks 2013.

Workflow transitions in Enterprise PDM can automatically print or convert SolidWorks documents on computers setup to support task requests from the server. Setting multiple computers to serve as delegates for Tasks can make the workload lighter and faster. However, each client computer that wishes to participate must allow the SolidWorks add-in to perform these tasks.

To enable this functionality find the Enterprise PDM icon in the system tray. It is typically near the system clock in the bottom right corner of the desktop.

Next, right click on the Enterprise PDM icon and select ‘Task Host Configuration’.

This will present a list of add-ins that are available on the selected server. Select the desired file vault and select the ‘Permit’ checkbox to allow access.

The computer will now be able to receive and process task requests triggered by Enterprise PDM transitions. Should you wish to exclude the computer from future tasks simply uncheck the ‘Permit’ option in the Task Host Configuration utility.
